Optical spectra of dusty starbursts
نویسنده
چکیده
This contribution presents the optical spectral properties of FIR-luminous galaxies, whose distinctive feature is often the simultaneous presence in the spectra of a strong Hδ line in absorption and of emission lines (e(a) spectra). A discrepancy between the star formation rate estimated from the FIR luminosity and that derived from the Hα luminosity persists even after having corrected the Hα flux for dust according to the observed Balmer decrement. It is shown that the e(a) spectrum can be reproduced assuming a current starburst and a dust extinction affecting the youngest stellar populations much more than the older stars.

The Role of Nuclear Starbursts in Luminous Infrared Seyfert 2 Galaxies
We present HST (WFPC2 and FOC) images and UV GHRS spectra plus ground-based optical spectra of four Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) that have Seyfert 2 nuclei (Mrk 477, NGC 7130, NGC 5135 and IC 3639). The data provide direct evidence of the existence of a central nuclear starburst that dominates the UV and optical light and are dusty and compact. The bolometric luminosity (∼ 1010 L⊙) of the...

Present AGN and starburst models aiming to account for the observed infrared SEDs consider a physical description of the dust and a solution of the radiative transfer problem. Mid infrared spectra obtained at different spatial scales (SST-IRS, ISO and Timmi2) are presented. They show that PAH bands are detected in starburst regions but significantly reduced near the centre of AGN. This is expla...
متن کاملYoung and Intermediate Stellar Population in Seyfert 2 Galaxies
We present and discuss near-ultraviolet and optical ground-based spectra of the 20 brightest Seyfert 2 nuclei, and HST ultraviolet images and ultraviolet spectroscopy for a few of them. The goal is to study the starburst-AGN connection and the origin of the featureless continuum. The results indicate that half of the nuclei in the sample harbor a young and/or intermediate age population. These ...
متن کاملDusty Starbursts and the Growth of Cosmic Structure
Dusty starbursts were more numerous around z ∼ 1 than today and appear to be responsible for the majority of cosmic star formation over the Hubble time. We suggest that they represent a common phase within galaxies in general which is triggered by the growth of cosmic structure.
متن کاملSpitzer Mid - IR Spectroscopy of Infrared - Luminous Galaxies at z ∼ 1 −
I discuss Spitzer GO programs aimed at studying the mid-IR spectral properties of IR-luminous galaxies at high z. I present the IRS lowresolution, mid-IR spectra of a sample of 52 sources from our GO1 medium size program. We found that ∼ 75% of the sample are at z ∼ 1.5−2.6, with redshifts determined based on features including PAH emission and silicate absorption in the mid-IR spectra. This da...
